As the result of a large expatriate population who live and work in Qatar, English is widely spoken and understood.

The average life expectancy in Qatar is currently 78 years. High-quality, free or highly subsidized healthcare is provided to all nationals and expatriates. The most prevalent diseases include cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, and cancer.

Incidents of violence are rare in Qatar and crime rates are generally low. Qatar is one of the safest countries in the world and is ranked 30th out of 163 countries in the Global Peace Index, the highest in the region. The Qatar police force is highly visible and capable, providing a high standard of security.

What about education?

Education, particularly women’s education, has been a major focus of the Qatar government in recent years. Qatar follows the policy of compulsory education until the end of the elementary stage. There are a large number of private and international schools. Besides, Qatar Foundation’s Education City, created as a center of educational excellence, houses international universities from the US, UK, and France.

Riyal is the official currency (QAR or QR). The Qatari Riyal is equivalent to approximately USD 0.27.

The country is becoming a major international center for sports and energy events.

How is the weather?

Qatar is primarily flat and desert-like. However, there are beaches and large sand dunes in the southeast, along the Inland Sea. The climate is characterized by a mild winter and a hot summer. In keeping with Islamic law, Qatari women typically wear the ‘abaya’, a long black robe over their clothes. They cover their heads with a ‘hijab’ (scarf) and some may wear a think black veil covering their face. Qatari men generally wear the ‘dishdasha’ or ‘throbe’, a white, tunic-like garment reaching to the ankles, with a headdress called a ‘ghutra’.

While Western dresses are widely accepted, modest dressing is expected.
